Who is responsible for thinking about the impact on everyone?

I recently had a difficult conversation with someone. They had an idea on how something should look and I had delivered something that did not match their idea.

The conversation made me curious about how we, as humans, behave. Are we spending all our time trying to make people see the world the way that we think it should be seen? Are we able to think about our global impact or do we distract ourselves by focusing only on what we think we can control?

In the conversation I had there were two viewpoints. A view that there was an idea not delivered on and a view that there was a rationale on the wider positive impact that was now possible on the world because the idea was not delivered on.

Whose role is it to think about the world wide impact of our ideas, decisions and demands?

Are we educated to think beyond our immediate ideas, needs and wants?

As the world starts to reopen post COVID 19 the question of thinking of our impact beyond our immediate ideas, needs and wants will fall into the hands of the global event industry in a significant way. It would be easy to justify a return to the pre COVID 19 world based on protecting jobs, economies and positions of leadership.

A more challenging (in the short term) approach with the potential to create a new and sustainable future for the global event industry would be to think about impact beyond our own ides, needs and wants.

Will event professionals do this?

The next few months will provide some insight and position our industry’s role as either acting to meet our immediate needs or acting with the vision of a future that works for us all.
